Comments:

The Whitefish Cross Country team opened up the 2011 season at the Libby Invitational. The Lady Bulldogs continued their success in Libby with a solid performance which led to their fifth straight girls team title at this event. The Boys team finished in second place, just three points behind Sandpoint High School, from Idaho, but ahead of Glacier High School of Kalispell.

The WHS Ladies team had four runners in the top ten to help them to the team title. Nicole Brist led the way with her first place finish in a personal best time of 20:07 for the 3 mile race distance. Rebecca Holdhusen and Maya Gordon finished in fourth and fifth positions, while teammate Emma Marchetti finished in 10th place.

"With the top six girls from last years State Championship team having graduated, I knew we'd have some work to do in order to be competitive. It looks like several young ladies have done quite a bit of work since last year. Our top four runners, Nicole, Rebbeca, Maya and Emma have done a great job of preparing for the season. The results show potential for our team to achieve a fair level of success for the rest of the season. The key to this team having continued success will lie with the rest of our girls and how much they improve though the season."

The boys team had a successful outing as well. Jace Kalbfleisch (6th in 17:18) and Fischer Gangemi (9th in 17:27) finished in the top ten, individually, to lead the Bulldogs. John Owens (16th), Brandon Maassen (17th), and Thomas Henson (19th) all finished within a five second span to round out the top five team scorers. Will Holdhusen (21st) and freshman Keaton Grove (27th) rounded out the Bulldog finishers.

"The boys came pretty close to winning this meet. I feel pretty good about where we are as a team. These boys look like they may have the stuff to have quite a bit of success as they improve through the season. We are fortunate to have a lot of newcomers on our boys team to mix with several returners. There will be a lot of competition to fill our varsity squad, which will help to make us a better team. Jace and Fischer did a fantastic job up front, and the rest competed very well for the first meet of the season. I look forward to seeing this team compete near the end to season. I think they will surprise a lot of teams."
