Comments:

The weather was a little cooler for the Whitefish Cross Country teams this past weekend at the Ronan Invitational cross country meet held at the Silver Fox Golf Course in Pablo. The competition didn't cool off at all. With Missoula Hellgate, Missoula Big Sky and Flathead in attendance the field was about as hot as it could get with great runners filling the field.

The WHS boys team ended up in fourth place behind the three AA schools. There were a total of 11 schools in the boys portion of the meet. Fischer Gangemi (14th in 17:16) and Jace Kalbfleisch (16th in 17:19) led the Bulldogs with their top finishes. Freshman Keaton Grove finished as the third runner for the Whitefish team in 29th place with a time of 18:19. John Owens (33rd in 18:31), Elias Taylor (34th in 18:35) and Thomas Henson (35th in 18:39) rounded out the Whitefish scorers.

"It was a tough field. There were a lot of great runners competing today. Although we were a bit back in the pack, I was happy with how we ran against quality competition. We still have a ways to go, but I like where we are at for this time of the season. We were running a bit tired this week, and our runners still did a fantastic job."

"Fischer and Jace continue to lead us. Their times continue to drop with each race. Keaton did a great job stepping into our number three spot. That is impressive for a freshman."

The Lady Bulldogs ended up in fifth place in the team standings. They were led by Rebecca Holdhusen (21st in 20:58) and Maya Gordon (22nd in 21:01). There were a total of 13 teams in the girls varsity event. Nicole Brist (27th in 21:43), Emma Marchetti (29th in 22:05) and Torrie Coe (39th in 23:00) rounded out the top five for the Whitefish team.

"It was another solid performance by Becca and Maya. They are doing a nice job of leading us. We will need to continue to close that gap between these two and our other scorers to be more competitive by the end of the season. I think that we have the potential to be a very good team by the end of the season, but we'll need a few more practices to get there."

The next meet for the WHS Cross Country teams will be the Mountain West Classic held on the U of M Golf Course in Missoula on Saturday.

"It's a huge meet. Just about every team in the state will be there, from all classification levels. Plus, there will be some great competition from Washington and Idaho running, as well. It will be a good chance to run on the state course against most of the top teams in class A."
