Comments:

The WHS Bulldog Cross Country teams traveled to Athol, Idaho on Saturday to compete against teams from Washington, Idaho and Montana. With over twenty teams in attendance, the Whitefish runners found that great competition creates an opportunity for fast running. The boys varsity team finished in ninth place out of 21 full teams, while the girls' varsity finished in 11th place in the team scoring.

"We had a lot of great individual performances", commented WHS coach Sara Brist. "Sarah Latcham had a breakthrough race with her eighth place in the girl's race. Her time of 19:39 for 3.1 (5KM) miles is easily a personal best for her. She stepped up to meet the competition."

"In addition to Latcham's performance, all of the varsity ladies did a great job. Payton Twete and Sloan Ellis are continuing to improve. Maya Gordon, Sarah Perez and Kennah Fuller all had nice races, as well. In addition, sophomore runners Katie Smith and Annika Gordon both ran well enough to earn their positions on the Varsity squad for the next meet in Ronan", Brist added.

The Bulldog boys' team had success, as well. They were led once again by Thomas Henson (28th in 17:08). He was followed by EJ Havens (36th, 17:31) and Keaton Grove (38th, 17:35).

"These three continue to lead our team. Thomas ran with a lot of confidence. He improved quite a bit from the last time he ran on this course, last season."

"Keaton Nicholson, Bradley Gerner, and Ethan Potthoff all had nice improvements this weekend. I was especially impressed with the performances of Bradley and Ethan. Both were running on the varsity for the first time. They did a fantastic job being thrown into the fire in such a large race. Both young runners are showing that they have a lot of talent for distance running, which will really help us out with our team depth."

"Senior Caleb Knox ran well enough to earn his way back on to the varsity seven. With him in our line-up we have a very solid top four. I'd like to think that we will have five or six others trying to grab the fifth, six and seven spots on our top seven. That will really help us when we reach the important meets in October."

The Whitefish teams will be back in action this Friday at the Ronan Invitational.

"We are really looking forward to competing in Ronan, as we will be able to run our entire teams together, rather than in Varsity and Junior Varsity races. That will allow us to see what we have. The competition is typically pretty stiff at that meet, so it will be a nice chance to see how we stack up with the teams from Western Montana."
